Before the event starts
Pre-match markets are available before the event begins. Prices can change as lineups, injuries, weather, news and market activity become known. A price shown earlier may not be available when you submit a slip, and a bookmaker may suspend a market as event time approaches.
A pre-match bet still depends on the operator’s market definition and settlement rules. The start time, event status and inclusion of extra time should be checked just as carefully as they are for a live market.
During the event
Live or in-play markets can change quickly as the score, time, cards, substitutions and other events change. Prices can be suspended while information is confirmed. A stream or score display may have a delay relative to official event data, so a visual update may not align with the market’s accepted timestamp.
Because of this speed, a live screen may show one price while the slip receives another or a market is unavailable. Read confirmation details and avoid making a rushed decision based on a delayed feed.
A practical comparison
| Feature | Pre-match | Live / in-play |
|---|---|---|
| When placed | Before event begins | After event begins |
| Price movement | Can move with news and market activity | Can move rapidly with event state |
| Suspensions | Possible before start or on news | Common around key moments or data checks |
| Information delay | News and lineup timing matters | Score and stream delay may matter |
Keep a limit either way
Neither format provides a reliable method of predicting results. Decide a fixed entertainment budget and time limit before an event, and do not increase them to recover a loss. If live betting makes it difficult to stop, disable promotional notifications, take a break or use operator limit and self-exclusion tools.
